Sub-Saharan Africa has the fastest population growth projected between now and 2050 and the highest youth population in the world. It is crucial that we factor this 'youth bulge' into all our human development efforts. Levels of education in Africa are comparatively low creating a considerable skills gap among youth at working age. According to the African Development Bank, 25% of African youths are still illiterate and despite a rise in primary school enrolment from 60% in 2000 to 77% in 2011 , the issue of low skills levels in the workforce will continue to be a problem.
The situation in Tanzania is not different, by 2050, Tanzania's population is projected to reach 138 million, making it the 13th most populous country in the world. Currently, half of Tanzania's population is under 15 years of age. This presents a structural challenge as the formal sector will need to expand at a much faster rate to accommodate the rising demand for jobs.
The KODEA Group’s Response – The Kilimahewa Project Shop (KIPROS)
The KODEA Group has started the Project Shop Class in Kilimahewa in order to provide quick impact skills development for youth in Tanzania. The project aims to encourage Tanzania youth to develop practical skills and to encourage them to pursue careers in their preferred sector.
How It Works
The project will be implemented in two “cluster regions:” Dar Es Salaam (Kilimahewa and Bagamoyo) and Ruvuma (Matimira and Lundu). We will build centers which will provide coaching and quick skill training in order to provide the following services to youth:
Skill-based training: training in carpentry; gardening; farming; bee keeping; cheap quality home building; pouty keeping; agribusiness; oil making; trees and vegetables nurseries; local irrigation; green revolution training; soap-making; baltic making; job interviewing skills, basic first aid, cooking classes and customer service.
Non-formal education: courses in literacy (English), basic mathematics, and computers.
Life skills: short classes in hygiene and health promotion, and leadership and employability training.
Sports for development: activities, football; netball; physical rehabilitation of sports fields and facilities, complimentary hygiene & recreation kits for youth.
Exchange programme: Best performing youth will be provided opportunities to take part in the in-country and / or cross Country exchange programmes in Uganda and Kenya
Modality and Duration: Young people who are interested have to apply through their local Government. KODEA Group Management will select participants according to the ‘first come – first served policy’. Applicants will be required to stay for a duration of three month or longer, in order to benefit from the programme. Each intake will have 14 youth, male and female. There will be an assessment of performance in the end of three months. Three opportunities will be provided to the best performing, a place in a VETA school, an exchange pogramme or a piece of land from their place of origin.
